I would have to get a special permit to open a B&B and the abutters will be informed. I have heard that B&B’s usually help the area’s real estate values…Does anyone have any information on this?

There are a lot of factors would determine if a B&B hurts or helps the area (area of the country, area of a given city, area of a given neighborhood), but as a general rule of thumb, appropriate commercialization of a property in an area of SFR’s typically do help the surrounding neighbor’s property values. With that said, you will really need to do your homework and be prepared for a backlash from the neighbors (assuming it’s in a predominantly SFR neighborhood). Seldom do neighbors want to risk having someone start a B&B, only to find out the market for one isn’t there and it becomes a disaster and eyesore that can’t be sold due to its configuration. I’ve seen this happen before, so make sure you business plan and statistical data is accurate when you meet with the planning and zoning, city council, neighborhood groups, etc.
